TL;DR — An ironman earns everything solo: no Grand Exchange, no trading. That turns the game into one giant unlock-puzzle where quests > grinding, every drop matters, and the correct order saves literal hundreds of hours. Rough path: quest hard early → Wintertodt → birdhouses/herb runs from day one → Barrows for gear → Slayer for everything else. And you're not actually alone — the clan is your sounding board.
Why play iron?
Because loot means something again. A rune scimitar is an event. Your first whip is a festival. Nothing you own was bought — the account itself becomes the achievement. It's the most popular way to "start over" for a reason. (CluckSquad has a growing iron gang — say hi in Discord.)
The first 100 hours, in order
1 · Quest like your account depends on it (it does)
Knock out the classic early XP quests:
Waterfall, Fight Arena, Tree Gnome Village, Vampyre Slayer, Witch's House — instant combat 30s+ without killing a cow. Then push toward the unlock quests from our
Quest Calculator: fairy rings, Ava's device, Ancient Magicks, Barrows gloves route.
2 · Wintertodt to ~90 Firemaking, early
Do it at low HP (less damage taken, cheap food) and the
crates shower a fresh iron with exactly what it lacks:
ranarr/snapdragon seeds, ores, gems, fish. This single grind funds your herblore and farming for months.
3 · Passive loops from day one
Birdhouse runs (Bone Voyage) every ~50 min and
herb runs every ~80. Two minutes each, forever. Hunter, Farming, Herblore and Prayer all quietly solve themselves.
4 · Gear comes from Barrows
No GE means
Barrows is your armoury: Ahrim's for magic, Karil's for range, melee sets galore — plus the runes that fuel your Ibans/trident-era casting.
5 · Slayer is your economy
Follow the
Slayer guide: whip at 85, trident at 87, occult at 93 — on an iron these aren't money, they're
the only way to get the item at all. Always be on task.
Iron-specific unlock priorities
| Unlock | Where | Why it's huge for irons |
| Fairy rings | Fairytale II (started) | The teleport web your whole account runs on |
| Herb sack & seed box | Tithe Farm / Slayer points | Farming loops without bank trips |
| Dragon defender | Warriors' Guild | Best offhand for years, free |
| Barrows gloves | RFD (full) | The classic "your iron is now real" moment |
| Bofa/crystal path | SotE → CG | Endgame ranged without ever touching a GE |
| Kingdom of Miscellania | Throne of Miscellania | Passive herbs/seeds/coal — the iron's "salary" |
Things mains do that irons shouldn't
- Buying-then-training mindset: you can't buy your supplies, so gathering skills (Fishing, Mining, Farming) stop being pointless — they're your shop now.
- Skipping "bad" quests: quest rewards (XP lamps, items, teleports) are disproportionately valuable when you can't trade. Do nearly all of them.
- Ignoring shops: Ironmen CAN use most NPC shops — buy your ropes, vials, teleport runes and chisels like a civilised person.
- Hoarding: alch your junk. Nature runes + junk rares = your early gp line.
Use our tools iron-style: the
Skill Calculator's XP-vs-GP column matters twice as much when gp is scarce (type your RSN, it loads your levels), the
Quest Calculator is basically the ironman roadmap, and the
Drop & Dry calculator will tell you exactly how (un)lucky your whip grind is.
Quick tips
- GIM (Group Ironman) with clanmates is the friendliest way in — shared storage, same rules, less solitary suffering.
- Never leave a slayer task without alch runes; never bank without checking your birdhouse timer.
- Your first fire cape attempt should be ~10 combat levels later than your ego says. Trust us.
- Post every milestone drop in Discord — iron drops get the loudest cheers in the clan. 🐔
