Bossing is the best content in OSRS, and it’s also the most gatekept-feeling. Everyone acts like you need a Twisted bow and 400 raids of experience to start. You don’t. Every single sweat in CluckSquad started at zero, died embarrassingly, and learned. This guide is your on-ramp: the friendliest bosses to cut your teeth on, what to bring, and how to not lose your bank doing it.
The golden rule of learning to boss: bring nothing you’re not willing to lose. Cheap setups, cheap deaths, zero stress. Once you’re comfortable, upgrade.
Free-to-play: Bryophyta
One of only two F2P bosses, and a perfect first target. Bryophyta (in the Varrock Sewers moss giant cave) has essentially one mechanic: she spawns growthlings that you clear with an axe in your inventory. Beyond that, it’s a straight fight. Low requirements, safe, and a genuine taste of boss rhythm before you spend a penny on membership.
The easiest members boss: Giant Mole
If you have membership, start here. The Giant Mole (under Falador Park) is arguably the easiest boss in the game:
- Attacks with melee only — so a single prayer, Protect from Melee (43 Prayer), negates almost all her damage.
- Requirements: ~60 Attack/Strength/Defence and basic gear (Rune armour + Dragon scimitar is plenty).
- Why it’s perfect: it teaches prayer management, food discipline and a kill loop without punishing mistakes.
The classic on-ramp: Barrows
Barrows is one of the oldest PvM activities in the game and a superb teacher. There are no big prayer switches or twitchy mechanics — it’s methodical: clear the six brothers, dig, loot. It rewards preparation over reflexes, which is exactly what a new bosser needs, and it drips out genuinely useful gear (and the odd big-money piece).
Next steps once you’re comfortable
- Dagannoth Rex: uses melee only, so you can safespot him with Ranged or Magic (62+ Magic + a trident/Slayer staff is ideal). The clan can walk you to Waterbirth Island.
- Chaos Fanatic: very easy with 60+ Ranged and only a couple of mechanics — but he lives in the Wilderness, so bring nothing valuable.
- Scurrius (the rat boss): low-level friendly and a brilliant group-learning boss. We run Scurrius trips specifically because it’s such a good teacher — perfect for a first group boss.
What to actually bring (starter template)
- Best affordable weapon for your combat style (Dragon scimitar is the classic budget melee pick).
- Prayer potions and food you won’t miss (monkfish/sharks depending on budget).
- The right protection prayer for the boss — most beginner bosses are pure melee.
- Teleports out so a bad kill costs time, not your bank.
Learn it with the squad
Here’s the CluckSquad difference: you don’t have to figure any of this out alone. We run beginner boss masses where someone experienced walks you through your first kills live, in voice, with zero judgement. Died on the mole? Welcome to the club — we’ve all done it. Never found Waterbirth? Someone will literally run you there. The fastest way to go from "bossing scares me" to "let’s do a raid" is a clan that teaches. That’s what we’re for.
Post "first timer" in our PvM channel and we’ll sort you out. Join the CluckSquad Discord and take your first boss down this week.
Heads-up: some methods above take place in the Wilderness, where other players can attack you. Always bring only what you can afford to lose.
